S700MC Steel Plate
Minimum 700 MPa yield strength, microalloyed structure and superior cold formability. The high-strength solution for projects that demand intensive bending and series production. Delivered ex-stock.
What Is S700MC?
S700MC is a microalloyed high-strength structural steel grade defined under the European standard EN 10149-2 and produced by thermomechanically controlled processing (TMCP). It combines high strength with superior formability, which is why it is preferred for parts that require intensive bending and series production.
What Does the S700MC Designation Mean?
Steel suitable for structural use.
At least 700 MPa yield strength.
Rolling with controlled temperature and deformation (TMCP); fine-grained structure.
Indicates a grade suitable for cold forming.
The TMCP method produces a fine-grained microstructure while keeping alloying elements low. As a result, S700MC has a low carbon equivalent and therefore very good weldability. Compared with S690QL, it stands out in thinner plates with a smoother surface, especially in dump bodies, trailer chassis and automotive parts.
S700MC Chemical Composition
Maximum chemical composition values for S700MC steel according to EN 10149-2 (ladle analysis, % by weight):
| Element | Symbol | Maximum Value (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | 0,12 |
| Silicon | Si | 0,60 |
| Manganese | Mn | 2,10 |
| Phosphorus | P | 0,025 |
| Sulphur | S | 0,015 |
| Aluminium (min.) | Al | ≥ 0,015 |
| Niobium | Nb | 0,09 |
| Vanadium | V | 0,20 |
| Titanium | Ti | 0,15 |
| Molybdenum | Mo | 0,50 |
| Boron | B | 0,005 |
Note: The total of Nb + Ti + V is usually limited to ≤ 0,22. The low carbon and total alloy content give S700MC its low carbon equivalent (CET) and good weldability.
S700MC Mechanical Properties
Guaranteed mechanical values for S700MC steel according to EN 10149-2:
| Property | Value | Unit | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yield Strength (ReH) | ≥ 700 | MPa | Minimum value |
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | 750 – 950 | MPa | Standard range |
| Elongation (A) | ≥ 12 | % | Longitudinal specimen (≥ 3 mm thickness) |
| Impact Energy (−20°C) | ≥ 40 | J | Charpy V, longitudinal (typical / on request) |
| Min. Bending Radius | ≈ 1,0 × t | — | Reference for thin sections (t = thickness) |
Note: Values may vary with thickness. For plate under 3 mm, elongation is measured as A₈₀ and the limit value differs. For MC grades, the impact test is generally performed at −20°C.
S700MC Forming & Bending
S700MC's greatest strength is its formability. The fine-grained TMCP structure allows low bending radii despite the high strength. Reference minimum inner bending radii:
| Bending Direction | Min. Inner Radius |
|---|---|
| Transverse to rolling direction (recommended) | 1,0 × t |
| Parallel to rolling direction | 1,5 × t |
- Where possible, position the bend axis transverse to the rolling direction.
- Springback is pronounced in high-strength steels; compensate the angle.
- Sharp edges and burrs can be crack initiation points; keep the bend edge clean.
S700MC Weldability
Thanks to its low carbon equivalent, S700MC is one of the grades with the best weldability among high-strength steels. Preheating is generally not required for thin sections.
- Method: MIG/MAG, TIG, submerged arc — low-hydrogen consumables are recommended.
- Preheat: Not required for thin sections; 100–150°C may be applied for thick sections or cold environments.
- Filler metal: Matching or slightly undermatching strength consumable.
- Heat input: Avoid excessive heat input; it limits softening of the fine-grained structure in the HAZ.
S700MC Applications
S700MC stands out in series production that requires light weight and intensive forming:
Trailers & Tippers
Weight reduction and increased payload in dump bodies, trailer chassis and axle connections.
Automotive & Heavy Vehicles
Chassis parts, cross members and reinforcement plates; series production by cold forming.
Crane Boom Profiles
High strength-to-weight ratio in bent box-section booms.
Agricultural Machinery
Added wear strength and formability for ploughs, trailers and harvesting machines.
Steel Profiles & Tubes
Cold-formed high-strength profiles and closed sections.
Containers & Equipment
Use in light yet durable body and equipment plates.

Frequently Asked Questions About S700MC
What does S700MC mean?
In the designation S700MC, S stands for structural steel, 700 for the minimum yield strength (MPa), M for thermomechanical rolling, and C for suitability for cold forming.
To which standard is S700MC produced?
S700MC is a thermomechanically rolled high-strength steel plate grade produced to the European standard EN 10149-2. This standard covers flat products with high yield strength suitable for cold forming.
What is the difference between S700MC and S690QL?
S700MC is produced by thermomechanical rolling (TMCP), while S690QL is produced by quenching and tempering (Q+T). S700MC offers better cold formability and weldability; S690QL is advantageous in thick sections and low-temperature applications. For details, see our comparison page.
Can S700MC be welded?
Yes. Thanks to its low carbon equivalent, S700MC has very good weldability. Preheat requirements are minimal for thin sections; for thick sections, manufacturer recommendations should be followed. A low-hydrogen method and consumable are recommended.
